Elon Musk debunks the idea of water-to-fuel converter, calling it ‘ridiculous’

A water-to-fuel converter called Nikuba is still being discussed. Nikuba is being discussed again after news emerged that Italian automotive manufacturers, namely Ferrari and Lamborghini, are looking at this tool. Elon Musk has also talked about converting hydrogen into fuel.

In the ‘Financial Times Future of the Car Summit’ program in 2022, CNBC once asked this issue to the world’s richest man and boss of the Tesla electric vehicle manufacturer, Elon Musk.

At that time Musk emphatically answered ‘no’. Even according to him the idea of using water or hydrogen as a vehicle fuel is ridiculous.

He explained, hydrogen fuel derived from water is not created naturally. Therefore to be able to get this fuel, it needs complicated and ineffective water treatment techniques.

“(Hydrogen fuel) doesn’t occur naturally on Earth, so you have to separate water by electrolysis or break down the hydrocarbons,” Musk said. CNBC in 2022, quoted Friday (14/7/2023).

“When you solve for hydrocarbons, you really haven’t solved the fossil fuel problem, and the efficiency of electrolysis is poor,” he added.

He said it takes a lot of energy to be able to separate the hydrogen and oxygen contained in water. Not to mention that these hydrogens need to be ‘condensed’ under very high pressure in order to be stored in a tube.

“So you really spend a lot of energy to separate the hydrogen and oxygen (in the water). Then you have to put pressure on it, it also takes a lot of energy,” said Musk

“And if you have to liquefy hydrogen, oh my God,” he continued.

So Musk concluded it takes a lot of energy just to turn water into hydrogen and then to store it ready for use. It is because of this very low efficiency that he feels hydrogen is one of the most ‘ridiculous’ fuels to develop.

“The amount of energy needed to make hydrogen and turn it into a liquid form is staggering. This is the stupidest thing I can imagine for energy storage,” Musk said.
