Bill Gates warn that Elon Musk can make Twitter “worse”. This was conveyed in response to the Tesla CEO’s efforts to acquire Twitter for USD 44 billion.
Speaking at the Wall Street Journal CEO Summit on Wednesday, Gates said it was unclear how Musk would change Twitter if he took ownership. Musk’s attempts to own Twitter have also raised concerns about the spread of misinformation on the social media platform.
The Microsoft founder admits that his track record Musk in other companies is very impressive. Gates praised Musk for doing a great job of putting together a great team of engineers at the companies.
“I’m a bit doubtful it will happen this time Twitter). But we have to be open-minded and never underestimate Elon,” he said as quoted from CNBC.
The tech billionaire’s comments come after Musk accused him of selling Tesla shares last month. Musk also tweeted a rude joke about Gates. But Gates said the insult didn’t bother him.
Gateswho has been replaced by Musk as the world’s richest person in recent years, questioned what Musk’s purpose in buying Twitter was, and whether his push to promote free speech made sense.
“How did he feel about something (on Twitter) that said ‘vaccines kill people’ or that ‘Bill Gates is tracking people?’,” Gates asked.
“What’s the goal? What’s the end for? Does it fit into the idea of false information spreading so fast (and) weird conspiracy theories? Does he share that goal or not?,” Gates said.
Gates said he plans to set up a social media unit with 3,000 people to help spread accurate vaccine information in the future. He stressed that “good messages” need to be conveyed by people who are trusted in society, such as political and ethnic leaders.
Over the past few weeks, Musk has hinted at some changes it will make once it officially has Twitter. He also mentioned that he was promoting free speech. Some time ago he also gave the idea to start charging companies that use the platform.
