In an interview with CNBC, Musk discussed his return to office policy which has caused many employees in Silicon Valley to worry because company officials had previously promised to be allowed to do WFH.
“I think the idea of working from home is akin to the bogus Marie Antoinette quote, ‘Let them eat cake,'” Musk said, as quoted by CNBC, Thursday (18/3/2023).
“It’s not just about productivity. In my opinion, it’s morally wrong,” he continued.
Musk later said that he believed employees would be more productive if they worked in an office. He later referred to employees at technology companies as the “laptop class living in la-la-land.”
Owner Twitter it also argues that since many people who work delivering food, building houses, or assembling cars shouldn’t work from home, office workers shouldn’t either.
“Stop acting superior with this work-from-home bullshit. Because they’re asking everyone not to work from home while they’re at it,” Musk said.
In the same interview, Musk said he works seven days a week but he doesn’t expect all of his employees to work like that. The 51-year-old man also allows his employees to take time off, although he admits he only has two or three days off a year.
Musk has ordered Tesla employees to return to offices for 40 hours a week from June 2022, and warned employees they could lose their jobs if they didn’t comply.
After buying Twitter in October 2022, Musk also implemented the same policy. Even though former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey previously allowed employees to WFH permanently.
