ELN Responsible for Kidnapping of Luis Diaz’s Parents: Colombian Government Statement

The Colombian Government confirmed, this Thursday, that the National Liberation Army (ELN) was responsible for the kidnapping of the parents of former FC Porto Luis Díaz, last Saturday.

In a statement signed by Otty Patiño, head of the negotiation team with the left-wing guerrilla group, the Colombian government demanded the immediate release of the Liverpool player’s father, to whom it attributed “full responsibility for guaranteeing his life and integrity.”

Luis Díaz’s parents were kidnapped last weekend in La Guajira, Barrancas. The Colombian winger’s mother was released during the police chase, but his father has not yet been found.

The ELN guerrillas and the Colombian Government have been in negotiations for several months to reach a peace agreement. Last June, the two parties reached an understanding for a bilateral ceasefire, which began in August.

The paramilitary group is the oldest active guerrilla group in Latin America and is responsible for the majority of kidnappings in Colombia, among other criminal activities.

Authorities in the Latin American country are offering a reward of 200,000 pesos (around 46,000 euros) to anyone who shares information about the whereabouts of Luis Díaz’s father.

Hundreds of soldiers are on the ground, in mountainous areas near the border with Venezuela, to prevent the father of the former FC Porto player from being taken to the neighboring country.

Luis Díaz, remember, missed the two Liverpool games that took place after his parents were kidnapped: the victory over Nottingham Forest (3-0), on Sunday, and the triumph at Bournemouth (2-1), on Wednesday.
