Elmhurst Hospital Commemorates 9/11 Anniversary

With a melody, Elmhurst Hospital in Queens remembers the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

“It’s a moment to also reflect and say ‘wow’ time passed in a minute, but in that minute look at what we did for our community,” said Helen Arteaga, director of Elmhurst Hospital.

Elmhurst Hospital has been one of the centers that for years has provided medical care to patients of the attacks.

The ‘World Trade Center’ program clinic has treated more than 900 people who have suffered from lung and mental illnesses.

These are survivors such as employees, students, and those who helped clean up debris 20 years ago. Treatments consist of therapies, physical exams, and medications.

“We treat patients with many different mental health problems and also with medical problems, there are many survivors but it is a pride to treat all patients,” explained Awilda Cortez, social worker.

Doris Bodine worked in Building 4 of the World Trade Center and managed to evacuate. It was caught in smoke when the towers collapsed. Three years ago, she began to suffer from respiratory problems and was admitted to the hospital program.

“I came to this program two years ago and received excellent care because they understand what we’ve been through… no one else understands,” said Doris.

In addition, Elmhurst Hospital unveiled a plaque to remember the victims and a photo that will be inside the clinic.

“It is a symbol that yes we can, yes we can fight with those who come today, what comes tomorrow, and what comes in the future,” added Arteaga.

The city’s hospital authorities posted a message on social media referring to the event at Elmhurst Hospital.

“NYC Health + Hospitals / Elmhurst met with WTC Environmental Health Center staff and patients today to commemorate 20 years since 9/11,” the message read.
