Ellen Page has on Tuesday Twitter announced to be transgender and henceforth to be known as Elliot Page. “I feel lucky to be able to write this down. That I have come to this point in my life,” said 33-year-old Page.
“I don’t know how to express how strange it is to finally love myself enough to pursue my authentic self,” continues Page, known from the Netflix series. The Umbrella Academy and movies like Juno in Inception.
While it is a “joyful” moment, Page, who insists on wanting to be addressed as “he” and “them,” also acknowledges that he is “afraid” of what lies ahead. “I fear the hatred, the ‘jokes’ and the violence,” said the actor. “The statistics are heartbreaking. Discrimination against transgender people is widespread, insidious and cruel, resulting in horrific events.”
“I love being trans. And I love being queer. And the closer I stay to myself and fully embrace myself for who I am, the more I dream, the more my heart grows and the better I thrive. “
He closes the message by encouraging other transgender people. “Transgender people who face daily intimidation, self-hatred, abuse and the threat of violence: I see you, I love you and I will do everything I can to change this world for the better.”
Page came out as queer six years ago, profiling himself as one of Hollywood’s most visible LGBTQ stars. In January 2018 he married choreographer Emma Portner.
