Ellen Jokikunnas and her husband Accumulation realized their dream last year and bought a house to be renovated in Italy. In the new “Dreams in Italy” series, the intention is to follow how the apartment overrun by rats, spiders and scorpions becomes the family’s second home.
However, everything is at stake even before things even get started – or a couple moving to Italy with their burdens. Ellen ends up in the hospital and it’s no small matter. The cause of his bad neck and back pains is finally revealed after half a year of doctors, physiotherapy and magnetic resonance imaging.
– Over the months, the pain started to get worse. A band of pain appeared around my sternum and I started to have mild paralysis symptoms. My legs went numb and the strength left them. I felt dizzy and felt sick, Ellen tells about her symptoms in the new series.
– The root cause was found in the MRI taken of the lower back: a large cyst inside the luch membrane in the spinal cord.

The verdict is surgery, because according to Ellen, the cyst compresses the spinal cord. That, in turn, has its own risks, including paralysis. Just in case, the couple has already thought about what practical changes need to be made to the Finnish home for a wheelchair. At least something should be done about the thresholds.
A pile of stones in Italy isn’t top of mind, but Ellen still gets a shopping hangover.
– I got a really big anxiety that now everything will go wrong. Why did we pull such a trick? I’ll never even make it to the house. Will I ever walk? Ellen is afraid before the operation.
Jaria is also scared. He says on TV that no similar surgery has been done before in Finland.
– The neurosurgeon said that no one has operated on anything like this in Finland.
He had also said that if anyone could do it, it would be him. The neurosurgeon was right. Ellen could already feel her toes when she woke up.

Rehabilitation is still slow. There will be a two-month break from filming. When Ellen and Jari click on the camera again, it’s still hard for Ellen to move, even to breathe. He can feel the pain all the way to the home stand, even though he tries to hide it as best he can.
Despite everything, Ellen bravely goes along with the journey when the nose of the camper is turned towards the car ferry, the Via Baltica and finally Puglia, also known as Apulia, at the heel of Italy’s boot. Once there, Ellen should calm down and not carry anything heavier than a can of milk. It’s easier said than done.
