Ellen Greenberg (27) died: – Stabbed 20 times:

Ten years after elementary school teacher Ellen Greenberg, 27, was found dead in her home in Philadelphia in the US state of Pennsylvania, Greenberg’s parents are still fighting a battle against the authorities.

Earlier this week, the case took a new turn. Greenberg’s parents now have the opportunity to present what they believe is new evidence before a court, writes CBS Philadelphia.

The goal is to get the authorities to turn around, because Greenberg’s parents and the Philadelphia police strongly disagree on an important issue:

Was Greenberg killed on January 26, 2011, or did she choose to take her own life?

Two different stories

Police believe the 27-year-old caused his own death, and came to the conclusion after first investigating the death as a murder.

Greenberg’s parents have never calmed down with the conclusion of the police, and in particular the forensic pathologists.

Since 2011, Greenberg’s parents and relatives have fought to get the authorities and forensic scientists to change their position.

They have hired a number of forensic experts, who believe they have found discrepancies in the police conclusions, skriver Washington Post.

The case has been contradictory from the outset.

Knife injuries to the body

Greenberg was found dead on the evening of January 26, 2011. She was lying on the floor in the kitchen of the apartment the 27-year-old shared with her fiancé.

The apartment was locked from the inside, the police were able to determine by examining a door lock. There was no trace of fighting in the apartment, nor any trace of burglary.

Therefore, the police first concluded that the death was self-inflicted, but the body of Greenberg told a different story.

The 27-year-old had been stabbed 20 times. Forensic scientists found stab wounds in Greenberg’s abdomen, chest, head and in the neck and neck region.

Several of the knife wounds in the 27-year-old’s neck and neck region appeared to have been inflicted from behind.

Therefore, the police sounded the murder alarm, before a few weeks later again characterized the death as a suicide.

Unanswered questions

Again, Greenberg’s family and her fiancé were left with many questions, writes the Washington Post:

If the 27-year-old wanted to take her own life, why did she do errands before coming home from work that day?

Why did she not write a letter?

Why was there a half-eaten bowl of fruit salad left in the kitchen?

“It makes no sense,” Greenberg parents’ lawyer Joseph Podraza told the Washington Post.

Experts have also pointed out other deviations, and therefore the parents of the 27-year-old have not given up.

Now they have to present the evidence they have gathered over the years, to a civil court that will decide the case.

– We look forward to the trial and have hopes that it can enforce justice, says Greenberg’s mother, Sandra Greenberg, to CBS Philadelphia.

Will not resume the case

Supporters of the Greenberg family have created a signature campaign demanding that the case be resumed.

It has so far received almost 50,000 signatures.

Forensic scientists and the police are not currently affected by the pressure.

Police have commented on what the forensic scientists and forensic experts have concluded, write the lawyers who represent the prosecution in Philadelphia in a post to the court.

Philadelphia police earlier this year stressed that even though they characterize Greenberg’s death as a suicide, it does not mean they are prevented from investigating the case further.

However, they have no plans to resume the investigation. The police believe that the evidence Greenberg’s family believes they have uncovered is not relevant to the conclusion.
