Emonte Morgan, 21, has been charged with the first degree murder of a police officer, two counts of attempted first degree murder, aggravated illegal use of a weapon and illegal use of a weapon by a criminal.
His 22-year-old brother, Eric Morgan, has also been charged.
Eric has been charged with aggravated illegal use of a weapon, illegal use of a weapon by a criminal and obstruction of justice.
Emonte and Eric are due in court for a bail hearing on August 10.
French and his fellow officer conducted a traffic check at around 9 p.m. on August 7 at West Englewood.
Two men and a woman were traveling in the car, police said.
A person inside the vehicle, suspected of being Emonte, reportedly opened fire on the police during the stop as the cops exchanged gunshots.

Police said Emonte had a physical altercation with the two cops before the shooting.
Paying tribute, Chicago Police officials said, “We will never forget the true bravery she (Ella) exemplified as she sacrificed her life to protect others. “
Chicago was in the throes of another bloodshed weekend.
Statistics show that there have been more than 1,000 shootings in the city streets in the past six years.
Ella’s death was one of 11 recorded after a security guard, 40, was killed for allegedly refusing his attacker to enter a club, ABC7 reports.
A 37-year-old man was shot twice in the neck and three times in the back; later, a 25-year-old man was shot three times in the stomach and died.
Then, in the early hours of Sunday, a 47-year-old man was found dead from a gunshot wound in his car.
A total of 73 people were shot dead over the weekend, including 16 in three mass shootings.
Until last weekend, only two men had been convicted of one of 212 mass shooting incidents since 2016, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.
