Elkjøp Scandal: Customers Feel Deceived and Trapped in Unwanted Subscriptions

Robin Özkan is one of many who have told Nettavisen about their experience at Elkjøp.

Believing that he would get a discount and free subscription to a streaming service with the purchase, Özkan’s purchase ended up being more expensive than he was promised.

Several Nettavisen have spoken to say that they have been offered a discount on their purchase, in addition to several months’ free subscription with Viaplay and TV 2 Play with Elkjøp. Some are offered a free subscription with Allente, but not everyone is told that it is an Allente subscription they are signing up for.

Not long after customers sign up for a free trial period, they receive an invoice, as well as information that they are tied to Allente for six months.

Elkjøp tells Nettavisen that they are aware of the problem.

– Simply trickery

Özkan was going to buy a dishwasher that was on offer at Elkjøp in October. A salesperson came up with the offer to get even more discounts on the dishwasher, in addition to six months of free subscription to a streaming service. He didn’t know it was Allente he was signing.

– I asked what it would cost, he said it was free. He said it was six months free, then there would be bills, and I could resign after six months, Özkan tells Nettavisen.

The offer sounded good, and Özkan accepted. But not long after, he received a bill from Allente in the mail.

– After two weeks, a hefty bill arrived, and I thought now I’ve been tricked, says Özkan.

He tried to get hold of customer service at Allente for two days, where he finally got to speak to a customer service representative. It was not possible to end the subscription, but he received a slight discount on his monthly amount, by around NOK 180.

– There are probably many who fall into that trap, without asking more or getting more information. Elkjøp are big, I think it’s very cynical of them, says Özkan to Nettavisen.

Do not shop at Elkjøp anymore

It is not difficult to find complaints from customers who feel cheated by Elkjøp. After Nettavisen wrote about customers at Allente struggling to unsubscribe from the streaming provider, more stories have come in.

“The dispatcher said that I would get NOK 1,500 off if I agreed and that I could come down to Elkjøp Alnabru when I received the first invoice from Allente.”

“I do not understand what Elkjøp is trying to achieve with this type of behaviour.”

“I bought a ps5 at Elkjøp this summer and was offered a discount in return for tying myself to TV 2 sumo and Viaplay for 6 months, but they said nothing about the fact that it was Allente who was the supplier and that it included a TV package.”

Eva Dagen Eek tells Nettavisen that she also went through the same trap at Elkjøp.

She says that she was offered free TV 2 play and Viaplay for six months, and received no explanation that she then had to switch from Altiboks, which she already had, to Allente.

Eek found out the next day that she had signed six months with Allente that were not free. She tried the same day to cancel the subscription, which did not work.

– Very confusing and I was very busy that day. Shop at Power from now on, writes Eek to Nettavisen.

Usual complaint with the Consumer Council

The Consumer Council is well aware of the problem, not necessarily with Elkjøp, but from several other companies. Thomas Iversen, consumer lawyer at the Consumer Council, says that this undercommunication is a common phenomenon with them.

It’s a fairly common complaint they receive, where customers are offered something for free but turns out to cost money. However, it does not have to be done illegally, but that the customer himself has not paid enough attention and realized that the item will cost money.

In this case where people say that Elkjøp never mentioned the binding agreement which costs NOK 300 a month, Iversen is clear that Elkjøp is breaking the law.

– If something is marketed as free, then it must be free. It will be very clear if it changes to no longer being free, Iversen tells Nettavisen.

He adds that it is perfectly legal to offer something for free, because it will then cost money, but that this must then be made very clear.

Elkjøp is aware of customers’ complaints

– We are unfortunately aware that some customers have received insufficient information and may have felt deceived when they entered into such an agreement with us. We deeply regret this, writes assistant sales manager at Elkjøp, Martin Stenvoll Pedersen, in an email to Nettavisen.

They encourage any other customers who regret entering into such an agreement to contact Elkjøp directly and the store they shopped at.

– In order to avoid similar experiences, we have implemented measures during the autumn to clarify the content of the agreement and improve the flow of information between seller and customer, writes Pedersen to Nettavisen.
