Its objective: that all vulnerable people who need preventive oral treatment can access the dentist even if it is not covered by Osakidetza. Currently, the Osakidetza service is limited to extractions, emergencies or oral surgery and does not cover fillings or root canals.

For Elkarrekin, this system should not imply “a cumbersome procedure, as is now the case with the social-health benefits program launched by the City Council since it stopped offering dental care in 2022. through Social Emergency Aid“, they have explained.
“On an exceptional basis, aid is granted through this program,” explains Elkarrekin. “But I know must meet a series of requirements and prove, through a medical report from Osakidetza, that, if no intervention is done, this omission will have serious repercussions on the person’s health.”
“Once these procedures are completed, it is the Social Worker who takes action and issues a professional assessment of the socio-health situation,” they add. “A long processing journey which often discourages people in need and they end up giving up on treatments, despite the irreversible consequences it entails, such as loss of teeth.

Avoid long procedures
For Elkarrekin, “when dealing with a health problem, this is not the appropriate procedure,” they explain. “The data show that demand for this care exists since in recent years, and since the benefit has its current nature, 89 families have been supported, with an amount of more than €67,000 and an average of €757 per aid“.
“We must offer more facilities. And for this reason we ask for launch of this service municipal dentist,” declared Elkarrekin spokesperson Garbiñe Ruiz.
In the motion they also demand that the local institution urge the Basque Government to incorporate the necessary treatments to guarantee correct and complete oral health into Osakidetza’s portfolio of oral health services.
