Good, better, Robert Lewandowski! Despite being 36 years old since August 25th, the Polish star striker is performing stronger than ever in his third season at FC Barcelona. After 16 appearances, “Lewy” has a sensational 19 personal successes and he also prepared two goals.
With his two strikes on Wednesday in the Champions League in the 5-2 win against Red Star, he managed to score at least twice in a game for the fifth time in the current season (43rd/53rd). In Belgrade it was his premier class goals 98 and 99 – whereupon Hansi Flick replaced him for Pau Víctor after 78 minutes.
Why didn’t he leave the impressive number 9 on the pitch so that he could, at best, immediately score his 100th goal in the most important club competition in the football world? “We also have to think about the next game,” explained the head coach. “To be honest, these things don’t interest me. I see our next destination in San Sebastián. We have to play on Sunday and need players who are at 100 percent. That’s the reason why we replaced him,” said Flick.
Only Ronaldo and Messi have broken the 100-goal mark
It will only be a matter of time for Lewandowski to reach the three-digit mark. By the way, only record scorer Cristiano Ronaldo (140) and Barça legend Lionel Messi (129) have achieved this so far. In the preliminary round, the Catalans will take on Stade Brest (November 26th), Borussia Dortmund (December 11th), Benfica (January 21st) and Atalanta (January 29th).
