Elina Svitolina Falls Short in Wimbledon Semifinals, Misses First Grand Slam Final

The 28-year-old from Odessa stopped one step away from the first Grand Slam final in her career.

Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina, who enchantingly returned to big-time sports after the birth of a child, could not reach the Wimbledon final. In the semifinal meeting, the Odessa woman lost in two sets to the representative of the Czech Republic Marketa Vondrousova 3:6, 3:6.

After a missed chance to reach the first Grand Slam final in her career, the Ukrainian could not contain her emotions. Leaving the center court of the All England Lawn Tennis Club to a standing ovation from the audience, Elina found the strength to thank the fans, but tears appeared on her face. The corresponding moment was snatched out by a television camera.

Following the results of Wimbledon, Svitolina became the third tennis player of the Open Era (since 1968), who in one major was able to overcome four former Grand Slam champions in women’s singles. On the way to the semi-finals, Elina defeated Venus Williams, Sofia Kenin, Victoria Azarenka and Iga Sventek. The victory over the Polish tennis player, who is currently No. 1 in the WTA ranking, stands apart.

In the other semi-final, the representative of Tunisia, Ons Jaber, beat Belarusian Arina Sobolenko in three sets 6:7, 6:4, 6:3.

Thus, there will be no Ukrainian-Belarusian confrontation in the final, which many expected to see. The decisive match of the tournament between Vondrousova and Zhaber will take place on Saturday, July 15th.

Recall that the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) said they respect the decision of Ukrainian tennis players not to shake hands with opponents from Russia and Belarus. The organization expressed the hope that the fans in the stands will understand the position of the representatives of Ukraine.
