Elina Ruka: Exploring the Relationship Between Man and Nature Through Art

The inspiration and also the theme of the work can be found in stories about and with sailors’ wives, in such feelings as longing, anger and adaptation, as well as in the parallel life when partners spend part of their lives apart, sometimes not being present at important moments, often losing the essential in the informal conversation. People of different professions, separated by pandemic and war, whose life goes separately, but forward.

The three-dimensional metal frame seems solid, solid, but when exposed to the weather, left untreated, it begins to rust. The twist in the frame is rough rope, it can be used to moor a boat, it is a strong, durable material, but it can also be used as a fairly flexible product. On the other hand, the red color of the object is associated with devotion, courage, love and anger.

Elina Ruck (1981) holds an MA in Fine Art Photography (2016) from Columbia College, Chicago. Received a Fulbright scholarship and multiple support from VKKF. Ruka’s works are in the collections of Sondra Gilman and Celso Gonzalez-Falla and Zuzāns. She has participated in exhibitions in Latvia, Lithuania, Belgium, Denmark, France, USA and many online exhibitions.

One of the artist’s interests in photography is reviewing the boundaries and traditions of the medium. Photography is a medium to create art. She takes photographs to create new images from them. In her art, Elīna Ruka focuses on the relationship between man and nature, most often creating her works on the theme of water. The continuous movement of water, amorphous nature, multiplicity and variety, variability and mystery are the stimulus for in-depth study of the subject and creation of art. Working with this subject is simultaneously observing and thinking about the ever-changing in life, in us and in photography.
