Elina Pinto on Changing Values and Measurable Happiness: Why GDP is Not Enough

“We think too much about convenience, not enough about values.” Elina Pinto on changing values and measurable happiness

Pinto admits to host Paul Timrot that the measure of value is changing. “Until now, we see a lot – GDP (Gross Domestic Product – aut.), GDP, GDP, but that GDP does not actually measure value. It only measures their economic benefit, money per ‘capita’, but GDP, for example, also occurs when polluting plastics are produced or when alcohol and gambling are sold.”

Pinto explains: “GDP does not measure how a person, for example, takes care of his loved ones, or whether he can enjoy a whole forest with natural riches. The fact that there are now new measures of value is changing a lot in the world right now.” Asked if there is such a happiness thermometer that would tell if a person is happy or not, the former presidential candidate points to the example of several countries where the budget is made differently, such as Finland, Scotland and New Zealand.

“It measures how well people feel, for example, in their work, or whether the needs of children and young people are taken care of. Some kind of measurement – whether a girl can go from home to school by bicycle. It seems trivial, but a girl rides a bicycle, she feels safe, it also means that there are orderly streets, it means that no one will attack her, nor steal, and she will also be able to come home. There are much more relevant and humane ways to measure how well we live,” she says, adding, “We think too much about comforts, not enough about values.”
