The members of the Ethics Committee of the Parliament unanimously voted in favor of lifting the parliamentary immunity of Elena Akrita after a lawsuit by the Prime Minister’s spouse Marevas Grabovski-Mitsotakis for defamation.
The SYRIZA MP acknowledged in a letter that she waives her parliamentary immunity. “I am not going to cover behind any immunity and any privilege,” she mentioned, declaring that she was able to be judged as an equal citizen by the courts.
The explanation was the MP’s posts in opposition to Mrs. Grabovski, which have been characterised by her as “offensive and immoral”, inflicting her to go to courtroom, whereas the Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had spoken of the “vulgar and unprovoked” publish, even asserting that he himself would testify as a witness in courtroom.
The advice of the Ethics Committee might be voted on within the Plenary Session of the Parliament. Within the meantime, the committee can be recommending the lifting of Mrs. Akrita’s immunity for one more earlier case after a lawsuit in opposition to her for defamation by a journalist.
