TRIBUNNEWS.COM, JAKARTA — Telecommunications operators are currently busy with increasing 5G technology services.
While upgrading the 5G network, they are also reducing the outdated 3G BTS and replacing them 4G technology and 5G.
The Ministry of Communication and Information (Kominfo) stated that the government continues to monitor the use of 3G network because the number of users continues to decline, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic.
Director General of Resources and Equipment of Post and Information Technology Ministry of Communication and Informatics Ismail said that people today prefer to communicate via data and video.
“Data usage is getting bigger, so those who use 3G (speed) are already low, with an average of 2 percent to 3 percent of 3G only users,” he said at the Telkomsel Smart Office, Jakarta, Wednesday (6/4/2022).

According to him, the insignificant number of 3G users should be encouraged to switch to 4G so that the internet connection is faster.
“This is no longer significant in terms of numbers, but massive socialization needs to be carried out. Because 2 percent to 3 percent (of 3G users) do not necessarily want to (to 4G), but they have not received card exchange information,” said Ismail.
Then, he added, 4G network support from the device side is also not a luxury anymore, so this socialization is important.
“Meanwhile, we do an appeal to operators, but it doesn’t have to be with regulations,” he concluded.
Director of PT XL Axiata Tbk, Yossie D Yosetia said XL will immediately turn off all 3G BTS.
