GOTHENBURG. Sweden’s JVM opener against Latvia was 25 seconds old.

Then Elias Salomonsson received a match penalty.

– It’s careless of me, says Salomonsson.

The JVM premiere barely had time to start before it was over for defender Elias Salomonsson, a regular in Skellefteå.

Salomonsson hit Emils Veckaktins with the club in the back whereupon the Latvian player fell into the sideline and lay down.

– I was perhaps a little over-excited. That’s what happens, just moving on, says Salomonsson.

– I go in to win the puck and happen to put the club in his back. It’s a bit unfortunate, he continues.

The expert: “It’s ugly”

SVT’s expert Jonas Andersson was aware that it was an ugly tackle.

– It is ugly, he completes when he is in a vulnerable position. It’s not like he’s twisted. That is probably a five-minute expulsion, it wouldn’t surprise me, Andersson says in the broadcast.

The on-ice decision was also a five-minute ejection and match penalty for boarding – and that decision stood after a few minutes of video review.

Veckaktins could get up after a while and play on. The junior crowns later managed to kill the five-minute numerical deficit.

Risk of suspension

Salomonsson’s match penalty does not result in any automatic suspension. Whether the rink will be closed is up to the International Ice Hockey Federation’s disciplinary committee.

Are you worried that there might be a suspension?

– I guess you always are when you get a match penalty. It’s not my decision, we’ll see what happens, says Salomonsson.

Sweden won 6–0.

– It’s a bit of mixed feelings. The most important thing is that we won, but it’s sad, says Salomonsson.
