Tonight Degerfors IF comes to Borås Arena. It will be the 26th meeting in the Allsvenskan in Borås. Elfsborg has 12 wins, four draws and eight losses. The goals 55-36.
At Stora Valla, Elfsborg also has an advantage. 12 wins and seven losses and thus six draws, 48-38 in goal.
It was also a meeting in the second highest division in 1985. Elfsborg won 2-0 at home and played 1-1 away.
Degerfors IF debuted in the Allsvenskan as team 28 in the 1938/39 season. As early as 1936/37, Degerfors qualified but lost to Hälsingborgs IF. But in 1937/38 things went better. Malmö BI was dismissed with 4-1 at home and 2-o away.
Degerfors came to Ramnavallen on August 28, 1938. It was a lightning start for the guests. Already after two minutes, Degerfors took the lead after a goal by Henry Jacobsson. But Elfsborg turned around quickly and despite a missed penalty at 0-1, it was 5-1 at half-time.
There would also be five home goals in the second half and so Elfsborg, in this future golden year, had won the only home game in Allsvenskan history with a double-digit score of 10-1. Gills Andersson scored four of the goals, Sven Jonasson three and Åke Samuelsson, Nils Samuelsson and Knut Johansson one each. Degerfors eventually left Allsvenskan together with Hallstahammar in 1938/39.
It only took a year before they were back, then after a qualifying victory against Halmia. They came to Ramnavallen in round 2 and now things went better for the Vulkan team. They won against the reigning champions with 3-1 (Åke Samuelsson goal for Elfsborg) and Degerfors finished second in the Allsvenskan when 1940741 was summed up. Hälsingborgs IF won and Elfsborg finished fourth.
Elfsborg then won three straight victories in 1942-1944, 3-0, 3-2 and 1-0 before Degerfors won again in 1944/45 with 2-0.
It ended 1-1 in 1945/46 which was followed by three new straight home victories 3-2, 4-1, 3-2 before Elfsborg’s home misfortune turned around. In the following five seasons, Elfsborg only managed to draw once and it ended with Elfsborg being relegated in the 1953/54 season.
In 1961, Elfsborg was back. Degerfors came to Ryavallen in round 19. Elfsborg had lost two straight games against Hammarby and IFK Malmö and the league lead had shrunk to a single point. Degerfors was at the bottom and playing for its Allsvenskan existence. That didn’t stop the visitors from taking the lead. Sten-Åke “Söla” Andersson was the scorer. Henry Larsson equalised, but then Degerfors’ Gunnar Aronsson fired a shot from 35 meters away that found itself behind the substitute goalkeeper Ulf Bertilskiöld for the day. Degerfors won 2-1. The luck for Elfsborg that day was that Norrköping won against IFK Göteborg with 3-1, so the league lead remained even after this round.
In 1962 Degerfors came to visit in round 18. Ove Grahn two goals and Leif Peterson one ensured that Elfsborg won 3-2.
1963 was a great season for Degerfors. For the second time in history, they came second in the Allsvenskan. The match at Ryavallen was already in round three and it was Lasse Heineman who decided it with the only goal of the match. After the 1963 season, the season’s shooting league winner (shared with Bo Larsson) Lars Heineman was recruited to Elfsborg but the clubs did not agree and it became a one-year case.
In 1964, the match took place in the series epilogue. Elfsborg finished 1964 strong with 8-1-0 in the last nine games. Degerfors was dismissed 6-1 after a hat trick by Gert Christiansson, two goals by Lars-Åke Gunnarsson and one by Henry Larsson.
In 1965 it was a match in round 13. Elfsborg fought at the top with Malmö FF and started strongly. Gert Christiansson and Ove Grahn each scored a goal and the victory seemed certain. But the red and whites came back. Anders Asplund and Tord Grip made sure they could go home with a point after 2-2. A precious lost point for Elfsborg in the hunt for gold. Elfsborg came to finish second after Malmö FF. This was a season where, despite two victories against MFF, Elfsborg did not receive a gold medal that was well deserved after many well-played matches.
In 1966, it was a match in round two. The match was perhaps most memorable because the high-profile John Hedin made his debut as a goalkeeper for Elfsborg. Elfsborg won 3-0 after two goals by Lasse Heineman and one by Owe Westerberg. Degerfors left the Allsvenskan and was only back in 1993, but then Elfsborg was not at the highest level.
It was instead in 1997 that they both met each other again. It was the penultimate home game of the season and Elfsborg won 2-1 after goals from Moses Nsebuga and Mats Rotting.
Degerfors was relegated in 1997 and it would take until 2021 before the “Vulkanerna” were back in the Allsvenskan.
In round 14, they visited Borås Arena. It was an easy victory for Elfsborg. Leo Väisänen headed in an early lead goal. Marocky Ndione increased to 2-0 after just under half an hour of play. When Jeppe Okkels scored 3-0 at the beginning of the second half, the three points of the day were secured.
In 2022, the Volcanoes came to Borås Arena in round 26. After a goalless first half, Diego Campos became the match’s first scorer after just under an hour. Substitute Oscar Aga equalized when 84 minutes had been played. With only two minutes left, Elfsborg were awarded a penalty. Michael Baidoo gained confidence but shot over the target. It ended 1-1 and Degerfors was one of two teams to take points from Elfsborg in the ten closing rounds of 2022.
