Thomas Kösling is no longer head coach of the Frankfurt Galaxy football club. The franchise announced this on Tuesday evening. The long-time head coach volunteered his position to promote the professionalization of the Men in Purple.

“We have come to a point where we have to become more professional and that is not possible with my current profession. We have therefore decided together that we will hire a full-time head coach and offensive and defensive coordinator,” said the long-time boss. Trainer.

Kösling becomes sports director

However, Kösling, who is a real institution in Frankfurt football, will remain with the Hessians in a different role. The police officer will act as the Galactic sports director in the future. As such, his first task is to find his own successor.

“The entire Frankfurt Galaxy would like to thank Thomas for his many years of work and his tireless commitment as head coach and co-founder. We will miss him on the sideline, but I am pleased that he will continue to play a central role in our organization as sports director.” said managing director Eric Reutemann.

Successor search on the home stretch

According to information from hr-sport, the search for a successor is already well advanced. Completion could be announced in the next one or two weeks. The new strongman on the sidelines will apparently come from the USA, the motherland of football.

How the vacant positions of offensive and defensive coordinator will be filled is still a little more unclear. Kösling most recently led the Hesse defense as head coach. Mostly successful.

First champion, in the end catastrophic

After the European League of Football (ELF) was founded, Kösling led Frankfurt to their first championship title in the premiere season in 2021. In 2022 the team narrowly missed the playoffs, and in 2023 they failed in the semi-finals against eventual champions Rhein Fire from Düsseldorf.

After a personnel rebuild, the Galaxy wanted to attack at the top again this year, but instead delivered a disaster season. “This year, for the first time, we saw that teams with five, six or seven full-time coaches compete against us,” Kösling stated after Hesse’s last game of the season. At the Galaxy, however, no coach has been able to make a living from football alone.

Personnel changes were imminent

It has been clear for some time that there will be personnel changes in the coaching staff. The Galaxy were looking for new coaches via online advertisements during the season. Spicy: Offensive coordinator Frank Roser was not informed about this, as he learned from his colleagues. It wasn’t until weeks later that they officially separated from him.

Most recently, Kösling always assumed that he would remain head coach of the Galaxy. After all, he still had one year left on his contract in Frankfurt. After internal discussions with management, the turnaround came. The new sporting director will remain with Frankfurt Football after his career as a player (2007-2013) and as a coach (2014-2024).
