The Instagram page “ELF Network” is not officially affiliated with the European League of Football. Nevertheless, with its 21,800 followers, it is a popular contact point for information or statistics about the league, which are presented there. The “Power Ranking”, for example, which lists the entire league subjectively according to its current form – and which the Rhein Fire has permanently led in 2023, is also always popular and triggers discussions. After the end of the season, the site has now gradually published a list of the best 50 players of 2023 in the ELF. The ranking was created together with the operators of the Instagram page “ELF-Checkdown” and “First Down Magazine”, and the number of games, injuries, statistics – and of course simply the subjective perception of each player – were taken into account in the assessment . The number of games explains why Rhein Fire’s Glen Toonga is where he is, namely “only” 16th and not even the best running back. In terms of statistics alone, it’s crazy, as Toonga has the third-most running yards in the league with just eight games this season (not much is missing up to the front) and clearly the best average of all regular running backs. But he missed four games due to suspension, which probably pushed him back. Perhaps it was also interpreted negatively by Toonga that Fire’s offensive line was so strong and made his life easier. With Leander Wiegand (43rd), Joachim Christensen (29th), Sven Breidenbach (21st) and Yasir Raji (7th), four players from this position group were voted into the top 50. There are also three players from the defense: Marius Kensy came in 42nd, Omari Williams in eleven (shared with Zachary Blair from the Cologne Centurions) and Alejandro Fernandez came in ninth. Fire’s attack is clearly in the majority, of the eleven players selected (no other team has nearly as many) eight come from the offense. In addition to the offensive linemen and Toonga, there are Harlan Kwofie (44th) and Anthony Mahoungou, who ranks seventh together with Raji. And then of course the official “Most Valuable Player” of the ELF season, who is of course at the top here too: quarterback Jadrian Clark. As with the ELF’s MVP election, here too he relegated the two Munich natives Markell Castle and Chad Jeffries to the two places behind him. Incidentally, the European League of Football itself is currently working on a similar list, which even includes the top 100 players in the league. Who is at the forefront should also be clear here. But it will be interesting to see how the league, which relies primarily on its stats, evaluates the Fire players. One can expect clear deviations; ELF Network, for example, has Luke Glenna from the Barcelona Dragons in sixth place, while in the ELF itself the linebacker is only in 60th place. Further rankings will follow.
