An eleven-year-old boy from Ukraine crossed the border into Slovakia all alone – equipped only with a small backpack and a plastic bag, his passport and a phone number scrawled on his hand. “He came from Zaporizhia, his parents had to stay in Ukraine,” Slovakian police spokeswoman Denisa Bardyova told the AFP news agency on Sunday. Volunteers took care of the boy.
The mother put the boy on a train to Slovakia on Saturday, where the family has relatives. The father, like all men of military age, was not allowed to leave Ukraine. The mother had to stay to continue caring for her disabled mother. In a video message on Facebook on Sunday, Julia Pisezkaja thanked all Slovakian supporters for their “big heart”.
“He won everyone’s heart”
The 11-year-old “won everyone’s heart with his smile, fearlessness and determination worthy of a true hero,” Slovakia police said on Facebook. The volunteers managed to contact the boy’s relatives in Slovakia. They would have picked him up in the meantime and taken him to the capital, Bratislava.
The Russian army has been occupying the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant since Friday. According to Ukrainian information, she had previously caused a fire in the plant by shelling, but it was able to be extinguished. Moscow denies the shelling and blames Ukrainian “saboteurs”.
