Eleven school children drowned during a school trip on the Indonesian island of Java. Ten other students were injured. The children were not wearing life jackets.
Their secondary school participated with 150 children in a clean-up campaign along the Cileueur River in the province of West Java. 21 children fell into the water when they collected waste on the banks.
“They held hands, one slipped and the others followed,” the rescue operation leader told Indonesian media. According to him, there was no question of a tidal wave or bad weather conditions.
Local residents and rescue workers managed to rescue ten children from the water. They were taken to a nearby hospital. The bodies of the eleven drowned students have been recovered.
