At least eleven people were killed during a concert in a stadium in the Congolese capital Kinshasa. According to the authorities, the victims were crushed in the crowd; there were far more people in attendance than the 80,000 on which the stadium is built.
It is still unclear what exactly happened at the Stade des Martyrs. Panic is said to have erupted during a concert by the hugely popular African pop star Fally Ipupa.
Tear gas
Earlier in the day, security forces fired tear gas to disperse the crowd of fans outside the stadium. According to the authorities there was violence among those present, but details are lacking.
Two police officers were among the dead. The Ministry of the Interior blames the drama on the organizers of the event. As far as is known, they have not yet responded to the allegations.
