The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) has arrested 11 individuals in connection with the attempted murder of detective chief inspector John Caldwell, in what is being described as a “significant development” in the investigation. Nine men and two women, aged between 21 and 72, were taken for questioning about the shooting on 22 February, during which Caldwell was shot several times by the New IRA as he put footballs into the boot of his car. Those arrested bring the total number of individuals detained in connection with the incident to 28. No one has yet been charged. The PSNI has said that Caldwell is making good progress and has made his first public appearance since the shooting.
