Elevating Bicycle Safety and Advocacy in Political Discourse

“For us, bicycle safety is a priority,” says Ross Goorden of the Fietsersbond. “You just have to be able to cycle safely on a cycle path. It must be accessible to everyone, including special needs bicycles such as tricycles or hand bikes.”

“And it must be ensured that the bicycle has an important place in new residential areas,” says Goorden.

“We are in permanent talks with the House of Representatives and ministries about these themes, but the elections are an additional starting point to bring them to the attention.”

‘Core message on quarter A4’

“After discussions with our volunteers, members and all kinds of other organizations, we send a letter to all political parties. They receive hundreds of letters, so we try to write down the core message in a quarter to half an A4,” says Goorden.

“It should be clear at a glance which themes are important.”

Goorden: “During the Provincial Council elections, we saw at a number of parties that our input ended up in the election program almost word for word.”

‘Matryoshka approach’

“When the cabinet fell, the phone started ringing and hasn’t stopped since,” says Tino Wallaart of Wallaart and Kusse. “Many people need advice, especially because the preparation time for the elections is much shorter than usual.”

“What the Fietsersbond already said, you must indeed be very concise. That is the first law,” said Wallaart.

“The approach of the Fietsersbond is comparable to a Russian matryoshka. If you are interested, you can open the doll for concrete measures. That is a very good method.”

‘Field is upside down’

“On the other hand, you can also choose one thing and focus on what is most important to you,” says Wallaart. “If there is one or two sentences in the election program, then you have already done a great job.”

“And what’s under the hood, you can draw attention to the details in many ways further down the road.”

Wallaar: “The big lobby offices are like, as long as we bet on the VVD and D66, our ideas will be fine, but now the whole field is turned upside down. There is a bit of panic everywhere.

“But that’s healthy, I think. Everyone should now be sharp again and look further than your nose is long,” says Wallaart.
