Maya Murmu was drawing water from a well in the village of Raipal in eastern India when the elephant appeared out of nowhere. The beast trampled the old woman, who later died in hospital.
Elephant returned
The woman’s body was burned at the stake in her village according to Indian custom. At night the elephant returned and pulled the woman from the pyre, flung her around and stomped on her again, writes the Press Trust of India.
After the elephant left, the family continued with the ceremony.
