Elephant attack on car in Malaysia: family escapes unscathed

The car was driven on Sunday evening by a 48-year-old man, who was traveling from Penang island to the coastal state of Terengganu with his 47-year-old wife and 23-year-old son.

Attack

The weather was rainy, and the driver’s view was somewhat obscured by fog, according to police. In a bend the car collided with the young elephant. “The calf walked along the road with the herd, says the local chief inspector against Malaysian media. “The animal fell on the road. When the five other elephants saw this happen, they angrily rushed towards the car and attacked.”

According to the police officer, the calf got up again and the herd left the road. The occupants escaped unscathed, but the car was severely damaged. Photos show the doors have dents and windows are shattered.

It is not known how the elephant will fare.

According to CNN, the elephant’s habitat in Malaysia has become smaller due to the construction of highways, and the animals sometimes forced to cross the roads looking for food. Signs are also placed along highways to warn motorists of elephants crossing the road.
