The conference was organized by the International Hellenic Association, in collaboration with the Municipalities of Kalymnia, Vari-Voulas-Vouliagmenis and Kifissia, under the auspices of the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece.
During the conference, the prospects for the development of small islands were examined with an emphasis on areas such as energy autonomy, water and waste management, transport, education and health. In particular, proposals were presented to promote the islands into “smart islands” through technological innovations.
In her presentation, the Mayor of Lemnos emphasized the importance of energy self-sufficiency and climate neutrality for the island of Lemnos. He presented the Municipality’s planning for energy production through small units of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and energy savings in municipal facilities. He also referred to the progress that has been made in the field of digital upgrading of municipal services, with the aim of improving citizen service and reducing unnecessary travel.
In addition, Mrs. George referred to the strategy of the Municipality of Limnos for the sustainable agricultural economy, with an emphasis on the reduction of the energy footprint and the introduction of modern tools in agricultural production. He highlighted the transition from “Conventional” to “Smart” agriculture, as well as the upgrading of infrastructure in the energy and water management sectors.
As part of the conference, the Mayor of Limnos met with various representatives of the local government, including the Mayor of Kalymnos, Ioannis Mastrokoukos, with whom the twinning of the Municipalities of Limnos and Kalymnos was agreed upon, highlighting the important shared maritime tradition of the two islands.
