MEP Elena Yoncheva described the investigation against former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov as a chance for the country’s recovery. The goal is to unravel the system built by him and the ruling GERB party, Yoncheva commented in an interview with Darik Radio’s “Reactive” program.
I hope that the Ministry of Interior has done its job and the court will rule on the guilt and crimes of former Prime Minister Boyko Borissov and those around him, said Yoncheva, who is from the group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament.
The Socialists in the European Parliament also came out with a position, informs Yoncheva’s office. “We expect justice to shed light on so many shady cases in the ten years in which Boyko Borissov was in power. Justice must prevail and show the people of Bulgaria and the European Union that there is zero tolerance for the abuse of EU and national funds. “Bulgaria does not deserve to be ruled in the interests of one person and his party,” the statement said.
Elena Yoncheva announced that she had sent a letter to the European Prosecutor’s Office requesting more information on the investigation against Boyko Borissov. She is in contact with the Office of the European Attorney General Laura Coveschi and as a member of the European Parliament’s Democracy Monitoring Group. Since 2020, Bulgaria has been under the supervision of the group, including a team of MEPs on a mission in Sofia at the end of last year.
Yoncheva expects the annual report of the European Prosecutor’s Office, which will be announced next week, to include more details on some of the 120 cases related to Bulgaria that are being worked on.
