Elena Rybakina admitted she was in shock when she first saw the great Roger Federer in person. Rybakina, 23, grew up watching and idolizing Federer. Several years ago at Wimbledon, Rybakina was competing in the Wimbledon women’s singles event when she saw Federer at the All England Club.
In a video from Roland Garros, Rybakina and several other tennis stars were asked if they had ever been stunned in front of a celebrity.
“I think when I played against the juniors at Wimbledon, I saw Roger up close for the first time. I was shocked,” Rybakina said in a video for Roland Garros.

At Wimbledon, Federer is an absolute icon and an eight-time record. Last summer, Rybakina became a Grand Slam champion after defeating Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final.
After her Wimbledon triumph, Rybakina revealed that she is still a Federer fan. “I always liked the way Roger Federer plays. Just his game is amazing but, yeah, except him, I just loved watching the games, no matter who plays and, yeah, it’s just a joy to watch n any match especially when it’s big fights,” Rybakina said after winning Wimbledon.
At this year’s Australian Open, Rybakina reached her second Grand Slam final. During her run at Melbourne Park, Rybakina spoke of being inspired by Federer. “The idol was for me, like, and always Roger Federer.
On the women’s side, I would say that I just like to watch, if I get the chance, love the different players. I don’t have a female idol,” Rybakina said in January.
Having reached two Grand Slam finals in his last three majors, Rybakina is now aiming to make a strong run at Roland Garros as well. Rybakina recently won a WTA 1000 event in Rome and is considered one of the top favorites for the French Open title.
