/ world today news/ The former Bulgarian ambassador to the USA, Elena Poptodorova, has resigned from the American Jewish Committee (AEC), reported the Jewish Telegraphic Agency (JTA).
Polish police said Poptodorova, director of AEK’s Central Europe office in Warsaw, admitted to taking about $400 worth of cosmetics from a duty-free shop at Warsaw airport on Monday.
Immediately after the incident, Poptodorova announced her resignation, JTA reported.
Polish media reported that Poptodorova explained what happened as a misunderstanding. The Bulgarian woman said that she was holding the cosmetics in her hand when her seriously ill mother called her. She answered the call and left the store to continue the conversation, not realizing she was still holding the merchandise.
“The woman pleaded guilty, returned the stolen goods, voluntarily agreed to be punished and was then released,” said Tomasz Oleszczuk of the Warsaw police press office.
AEK announced on Wednesday that it had accepted the resignation of Poptodorova, who had headed the organization’s Central European office since September 2016.
Poptodorova explained that she was resigning “for personal reasons”.
