Documento gives the floor to the victim of the unthinkable case in Ioannina
Elena Leukovic is a girl with deep wounds… Of those that mark body and soul, especially the latter, and are difficult to manage. In her case, the engravings were written twice. Because the one who caused them is not just any third party… a bastard who happened to be in her path. It’s her father himself, who doesn’t call him that anymore.
Elena Lefkovits is the daughter of the prominent Gianniotis Petros Lefkovits, whose family has strong connections with the ND and government ministers.
Today, the now adult girl speaks publicly by name about the nightmare she experienced when she was only eleven years old at the hands of her own father and requests that both her name and that of Petros Leukovic, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison for the rape of of his child.
He chose Documento, since in October 2022 we were the ones who first published this chilling story, which was ignored by most of the media, but without mentioning the name of Petros Leukovits, only for reasons of respect and protection of the child and the other family members.
We are a few days before the trial of the case in the second instance. The treatment reserved by the authorities, police and judicial, to… the eminent Gianniotis was the last straw in her indignation. And it made her overcome the fear but also ignore the consequences of this decision. You see, Petros Leukovich was never arrested by the police authorities in 2018, when Elena formally reported him to the police. He continued to walk free a few months later, when criminal charges were brought against him for three offenses of a sexual nature against a minor under the age of twelve by the Prosecutor’s Office of Ioannina. Also, there was never an order to release his information and photos to the public, as is customary in cases of this type for the protection of society as a whole.
Does the fact that in the past Petros Lefkovits was a candidate for MEP with the Action of the current Minister of Environment and Energy Theodoros Skylakakis play a role in this outrageously favorable treatment, while his brother was a candidate for parliament in 2012 with the ND in Ioannina? Have his strong connections with the ND contributed to his veil of silence for six years, since 2018, when the girl reported him to the police?
He said he was “training her to have experience”
According to the referral will and from what was heard at the Artas Criminal Court in September 2022, when Petros Leukovits sat in the defendant’s dock, everything happened from September 2010 until the summer of 2011. Petros Leukovits repeatedly raped the then 11-year-old his daughter Elena in their own house. In order not to tell anyone about what was happening, he threatened her with her own life.
“He had built an environment where we were all scared – my mother and my brothers too. So when these things happened I had in my mind that if I objected, he would lash out in anger. He will hit me, he will do anything” Elena Leukovic begins her narration in Documento.
According to her, Petros Leukovich justified his sick action by telling her that he is doing it to “educate her”.
“He was telling me that he is doing all this for my good. Not to have bad experiences, which obviously I didn’t believe, I didn’t feel like that’s the case.”
So he was sexually abusing you to get experience?
To know, and well.
Was he “training” you?
Yes.
Elena described in detail to the court what she had experienced. Speaking to us with difficulty, he tries to describe the dramatic moments.
In court, how did he treat you when you testified?
He wasn’t talking at all. All he did, at one point when I was crying, is to say, “Elena, please calm down,” and I turned and said to him, “You know very well what you’ve done.” I was agitated. I couldn’t calm down. However, he did nothing. I didn’t stay to hear anyone after I came out to talk. I learned from my friends who were there what they were saying. More generally in court I was telling in detail what was happening in Preveza, that the first time I was penetrated I bled and my mom and his mom thought I had my period and then I never had it again.
“I first told his mother”
Elena continues her narration. Many times it is elegant. Her voice shakes, but she doesn’t stop. She is a strong girl.
“The first time I told his mother was when I was in second or third high school,” emphasizes Elena, who she also avoids referring to as grandmother. For her she is “Peter’s mother” and not her grandmother.
“He had told me that he knew he was nervous, but he never expected anything like this and that he would be by my side.”
And what did he tell you to do?
He told me not to do anything and that he is on my side. Then I told my mom, who for a year did nothing. He was lying to me about talking etc. Then I left home. I lived in the university dormitories. Shortly after that I decided with the mom of a friend who was very close to me to do something about it and I made the decision to report it to the police. I went with a friend of mine, but I was alone when I spoke.
Well, didn’t your mom come along?
She didn’t know either. He found out later, when the paper came from home. From then on he started to be with me through it all.
“I knew he was always involved in parties, but because I was young I didn’t realize. I had never paid attention. The first is that he was never remanded in custody, while after the court, although he was sentenced to 18 years, he is out. I can’t stomach this”
Elena also describes a meeting with her father after the formal complaint she made to the authorities: “After that I went home, I found him alone and I told him that ‘whatever you have done to me you will find in front of you and what to me you have c… life, you have taken away my entire childhood”. Anyway, I was telling him a lot and he didn’t seem to feel anything. He was lying on the bed as he always was, naked, and he was telling me that “I didn’t want to hurt you. I did it for good”.
Weren’t you scared?
We haven’t had any communication yet. I only remember in the beginning he was sending me some messages which I no longer have because I have changed my number. Of the type “you sent me an apology” and all this at the same time when I had made the complaint. However, to my mother and my brothers he used to say “I’m going to kill your daughter”. She told my mom and my brothers that I was lying. Not to me, he didn’t say that.
What did he tell your mom about all this?
When she had first spoken to him his response was that the only thing he did to me was to show me how to put the condom on. Which obviously my mom didn’t believe. That’s all he admitted to her. Of course, there are so many more from behind.
Has your fear of this man gone? I see you call him by his name. You don’t call him father.
No, I didn’t call him. Only at school when I was little these. A very large piece of fear is gone. The more. All that’s left for me is that maybe – it just came out to me recently – I might be hurt by it. But I felt that once I realized how many connections it has. I didn’t realize how into them he is.
Did you understand this from the treatment he has received from the Justice Department?
Yes.
Do you think something has happened there?
Yes. I knew he was always involved in partisanship, but since I was young I didn’t realize. I had never paid attention. The first is that he was never remanded in custody, while after the court, although he was sentenced to 18 years, he is out. I can’t stomach this. On the other hand, when his computers, mobile phones, etc. were confiscated. nothing was reported in court. I’ve seen what they had inside… They haven’t even been opened. All of this worries me.
What are you waiting for now? What will be your justification?
The least that can happen to me after all this is just for this Justice to work and for him to enter with the years that belong to him, or at least not be three. I don’t live in my bubble anymore. I know how Justice works, but this is the least that can happen to me. And I also want it to end so I can look at me. It’s been seven years that I’m the only one who seems to be affected by all of this and he’s only been given his name, but only to a very small degree.
Do you think he might have done the same to other underage girls?
I have no idea, but when he did it to me he was telling me about other underage girls.
Has it been learned in Ioannina what has happened?
He has learned enough, the truth is. I know that most shops did not accept him, that his old friends and acquaintances have quit. Everyone is with me, except his brother, his mom and some of his mom’s friends who think I did it for the money or because she wouldn’t let me get into Fine Arts – things like that. Recently, my friends who live in Ioannina tell me that it is normally outside.
In court, who testified in his favor?
His mother and his brother.
And what did they say?
His mother used to say that I wanted to get money and I’m doing it with a vengeance for the school. His brother said that in addition to monster parents there are also monster children and his argument was that sometime when I was little he had come to the house and I told him what he brought me as a present and he said nothing and that after that I never spoke to him again .
Are you doing anything to help yourself? Have you asked for psychological support?
Yes, I’ve been seeing a psychologist for a year now. I am also receiving treatment, I have a psychiatrist as well. In the last year and a half there has been a lot of attention on it. I try this a lot and I kind of already see changes in me, in how I deal with it and with more strength, but ok, it’s too big.
