Elena Adelantado and Remedios Bravo They are two from Castellón who have been treated with a new treatment for breast cancer, and who have managed to heal from their respective tumors. Two examples of overcoming that invite the rest of women who have the possibility to undergo this process.

This trial, promoted by the US cooperative group Swog Cancer Research Network, with the support of the US National Cancer Institute, has the participation of the Geicam Breast Cancer Research Group, which has contributed to it with the inclusion of 792 women. representing almost 20% of participating patients, through 21 Spanish hospitals.

In Castellón, the breast cancer unit receives some 270 new patients every year, of which it is estimated that 15 or 20% would have between one and three axillary nodes. Of these, this treatment would be applied to those who are in postmenopausal age, so it is estimated that annually there would be about 30 women.

Elena Adelantado is a Castelló neighbor who at the age of 47 was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news, he says, was “devastating”: “After the tumor was diagnosed, they analyzed it and had to remove my breast. It made me super happy that I had the treatment without chemotherapy, because I had suffered it with my mother and I knew how hard it was, although you also had the question of whether it would reproduce more quickly.

“I was afraid of going through what I went through with my mother due to chemo again”

And he explains: “They gave us a daily pill, which I still take, and everything has gone great, which shows that it is a fundamental advance for the future.”

He was born in Córdoba, but has lived in Castelló all his life. Remedios Bravos is another of the faces that tells of the success of this trial: “When the doctor offered it to me, many doubts arose because it was a treatment that was still being studied and you are afraid of whether it will turn out well.”

However, he explains that “it was an opportunity to help science and the result has been wonderful. Chemo is a very strong treatment that has many side effects, they told me that it still affected my eyesight a little, but the whole process has gone smoothly ».
