Elementary School Teacher Becomes President of Peru, Signs of People Fed up with Political Elite

LIMA – Pedro Castillo, 51, an elementary school teacher and budding politician, was elected President Peru in the election. Activists say Castillo’s victory is a sign of the people’s disgust with the political elite breaking its promise to fight for the poor.

The village teacher on Monday became the winner of Peru’s presidential election after the country’s longest electoral tally in 40 years.

Castillo, whose supporters include poor and rural Peruvians, beat far-right politician Keiko Fujimori with just 44,000 votes.

Electoral authorities released the final official results of the electoral tally more than a month after the second round of elections took place in the South American nation.

Holding a pencil the size of a stick, the symbol of his party; Free Peru, Castillo popularized the phrase; “There are no more poor people in rich countries.”

The economy of Peru, the world’s second-largest copper producer, has been devastated by the coronavirus pandemic, raising poverty levels to nearly a third of the population and wiping out profits within a decade.

Peru’s shortage of public health services has contributed to the country’s poor pandemic outcomes, leaving it with the highest global per capita death rate.

Castillo has pledged to use revenues from the mining sector to improve public services, including education and health, which are being sucked in by the impact of the pandemic.

  1. I truly wish Peru well with their new President. Canada has been stuck with a pathetic ex-drama teacher as Prime Minister since 2015 (Justin Trudeau) and has been plagued with scandals, destruction of the economy and complete debt death spiral. I do not attribute this to Justin being a teacher, but to a being a privileged socialite who has never worried about reality or his future. I do not believe this would be the case with Castillo so I hope he will be a leader focused on the well being of his people, not himself.
