Elementary School Students Get an Inside Look at Local Politics and Community Involvement

On Wednesday, June 14th, as part of the municipal education campaign week, the 3rd and 4th graders of elementary school visited the Kaltenleutmachen municipal office, where Lower Austria’s youngest mayor, Bernadette Geieregger, is in office.

Children get to know home community

The children were able to ask the mayor questions, got to know the tasks of the municipality and became aware of politics and the mayor’s office. Geieregger emphasized: “The municipality lives from the commitment of its citizens. It was therefore a special pleasure for me to welcome the children to the municipal office. The better they know their home community, the more they appreciate life here and want to continue to participate in community activities in the future. The community education campaign week is a great opportunity to give the children a first insight into local politics.”

The children also learned that their concerns are heard and that they can have a say themselves. The best example of this was the planning and construction of the new children’s playground in Emmelpark, which was planned jointly according to the children’s ideas, implemented with the community and opened on June 3rd. “We notice that it makes a big difference in acceptance when the children are involved in the decisions. The project was a complete success – this is also shown by the positive reactions of the children and their parents,” reports Geieregger. A visit to the new children’s playground marked the end of this instructive day.
