The first race of the two electric cars is really unfair: after a countdown of three per horn, both drivers step on the power pedal, but filmed from the Tesla it looks like his opponent, the new Mini Cooper SE that has been available since March, simply stands stay. No wonder, because the small electric car from the BMW group was dealing with a Tesla Model 3 Performance, and that accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 3.4 seconds instead of 7.3 seconds (like the Mini) only up to 150 km / h). This is impressively demonstrated in a video on the comparison. For a second run, however, the two testers think of something else, and the Mini wins.
Love for Tesla as for Mini
The moderator explains after the first race, in which the Model 3 disappears almost out of sight, and after he has raved about the acceleration of the Performance Tesla, he has to say directly that he didn’t want to make the Mini bad. He loves both electric cars, he explains, they are only very different – and the Model 3 is just faster.
But his opponent with the electric Mini also has a Tesla in real life, a Model 3 with all-wheel drive, he says. And he knows from it how much it has an impact if you switch on the chill mode (called “casual” in Germany); the setting significantly reduces the performance of Teslas, which is used, for example, by drivers who are not yet familiar with it or who want to save electricity. The two agree to activate this mode for the next race.
Horn again three times, and again the two drivers (on remarkably similar looking white seats) step on the pedal. The film is filmed back out of the Tesla. In this perspective, it can be seen that it sets itself off a bit right at the start – but the lead quickly disappears, the Mini pulls past the Model 3 and continues to gain a lead. Because the testers did not expect this, the Tesla is no longer visible from the outside for the rest of the race. Instead, interior shots show his amazed driver and the delighted man in the electric mini.

“This should only show how much the chill mode reduces the performance in the Tesla Model 3,” the mini-driver explains more matter-of-factly afterwards – despite his own experience, he himself was amazed at the extent. But the result is definitely a good argument for the Mini, agrees the moderator: The small competitor can now claim to be as fast as a Tesla Model Performance, at least if it is moved in casual mode.
