Eleider Alvarez was knocked out. by Joe Smith Jr. at the ninth cover, Saturday night, in Las Vegas.

Eleider Alvarez took a step back in her quest to become world champion again by losing by knockout. in the ninth round against Joe Smith Jr., in the main bout of a closed-door gala at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday night.

Alvarez (25-2, 13 KOs) looked breathless against a stubborn opponent and he was unable to emerge triumphant from this vacant title bout. the World Boxing Organization (WBO), abandoned by Saul Alvarez. The 36-year-old Colombian-born Montrealer was the third contender for the title, which he already held before losing it in his rematch against Sergey Kovalev in February 2019 .

Smith Jr. (26-3, 21 KOs) was the fourth contender for the belt. He sent his rival to the all-in with a powerful right hand followed by a left jab. He was the aggressor the entire fight.

The two boxers wasted no time studying each other in the first round and Smith Jr. had some good times, including a streak of several hits while his opponent was in the cables.

In subsequent rounds, Smith Jr.’s aggressiveness came as a surprise compared to Alvarez’s more methodical style. The American steadily darkened his head towards his opponent, landing several power punches that caused some blood to flow from his nose.

Smith Jr. continued to set his pace in the fifth and sixth rounds, but Alvarez managed to put in a good right hand that knocked him off a little.

However, that wasn’t enough to intimidate the American, who kept the same game plan until he ended the fight. He will now face the winner of the other playoff between the top two contenders, Russians Umar Salamov and Maksim Vlasov.

As for Alvarez, the road to a new world championship fight has clearly become more complicated.
