Electrum’s Green Factory in Cikarang: Producing 1 Million Electric Motorbikes per Year

Electrum, a joint venture between PT GoTo Gojek Tokopedia Tbk (GoTo) and PT TBS Energi Utama Tbk (TOBA), has announced the construction of its first electric motor factory in Cikarang. The factory, located at the Greenland International Industrial Center (GIIC), covers a 3-hectare land in the GICC E zone.

The main director of Electrum, Pandu Sjahrir, along with the deputy director of TOBA, revealed that the factory is expected to produce 250 thousand electric motorbikes per year, with the potential to reach 1 million units per year if fully utilized. The factory will serve as an electric motorbike assembly facility and is being developed as a “green factory.”

Pandu Sjahrir stated during the groundbreaking ceremony on Friday that the construction of the factory is projected to be completed within the next 12-15 months, after which production will commence. However, he did not disclose the exact amount of investment required for the project, only mentioning that both GoTo and TOBA have contributed funds on a 50:50 basis.

Patrick Adhiatmadja, the managing director of Electrum, explained that initially, there will be one production line, but the entire factory area has the potential to accommodate up to four assembly lines, with a capacity of 250 thousand units per year each. This would result in a total production capacity of approximately 1 million units.

The Electrum electric motor factory aims to achieve a Domestic Component Level (TKDN) of 40% once it becomes operational. However, in the initial stages, Electrum plans to start its business with Completely Build Up (CBU) products, which are electric motors imported in one piece from abroad. The company plans to import around 3,000-5,000 units this year.

Electrum has previously collaborated with Gojek for an electric motorbike pilot project and will continue to sell electric motorbikes to the public. Initially, the focus will be on GoTo drivers, but the company plans to expand its market to retail customers as well.

In addition to the factory construction, Electrum also announced collaborations with several parties. Pertamina, through its subsidiaries Pertamina Power Indonesia and Pertamina Patra Niaga, will support the packaging of two-wheeled electric vehicle batteries and the production of battery cells from the Indonesia Battery Corporation. GIIC has signed a memorandum of understanding to purchase and gradually use Electrum electric motorbikes as operational vehicles in the GIIC area. Planet Ban has also signed a memorandum of understanding for the placement of a Battery Swap Station (BSS) and after-sales service at hundreds of Planet Ban outlets in the Jakarta area.

The Electrum electric motor factory is expected to contribute to the growth of the electric vehicle industry in Indonesia and promote sustainable transportation options.

How will the establishment of the factory contribute to the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry

Ng that it is a “significant investment.”

The establishment of this factory marks an important milestone in the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry. The demand for electric motorbikes has been steadily growing in the country, driven by factors such as rising fuel prices, increased environmental awareness, and government initiatives to promote electric mobility.

Electrum aims to capitalize on this growing market by providing affordable and sustainable electric motorbikes. The factory’s location in Cikarang, a strategic industrial area, will enable efficient production and distribution of these electric vehicles to meet the growing demand in the country.

In addition to its focus on sustainable transportation, Electrum also places a strong emphasis on environmental responsibility. The factory will be developed as a “green factory,” incorporating eco-friendly practices and technologies to minimize its carbon footprint. This aligns with the goals of both GoTo and TOBA, which are committed to promoting a greener and more sustainable future.

The construction of the factory is expected to create employment opportunities and contribute to the local economy. It will also support the government’s vision of developing a robust electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.

With the completion of this factory, Electrum is poised to become a key player in the Indonesian electric motorbike market. By leveraging the expertise and resources of its joint venture partners, GoTo and TOBA, the company is well-positioned to produce high-quality electric motorbikes that cater to the diverse needs of Indonesian consumers.

The establishment of this factory is not only a significant investment for Electrum but also a significant step forward in the development of Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry. It demonstrates the commitment of both GoTo and TOBA towards sustainable mobility and their belief in the potential of electric vehicles to transform Indonesia’s transportation landscape.
