Electrovaya Introduces New Lithium-ion Battery with High Energy Density and Long Lifespan

Electrovaya, a Canadian company, has introduced its new lithium‌ batteries called ⁢Infinity-HV, which utilize NCM cathodes (nickel, cobalt, and ‍manganese). NCM is a mixture suitable for high energy density and a decent lifespan, typically reaching around 1500-2500 cycles (common for most electric vehicles). While ⁢it ⁣may‌ not reach the 4000+ cycles of ⁤LFP (cheap Chinese ‍electric⁣ vehicles, Tesla Standard Range, soon Ford and VW, solar storage),⁢ it surpasses NCA (such as ‍Tesla ‌Long Range), which usually achieves around 1000 cycles, or LCO, found in consumer electronics, where we are talking about higher hundreds ‌of cycles. ⁤However, Electrovaya has managed to surpass the capabilities of LFP with its ‍Li-Ion NCM ⁤batteries.

The⁤ company‍ has utilized a ceramic⁣ separator with high resistance, claiming a lifespan of⁢ 25 years‍ with 1 cycle per day. This translates to over 9000 cycles. If⁢ used in an electric vehicle with a real range of 400 km, we are talking about a lifespan of nearly 3.5 million km. In other ⁤words, a regular car would‌ survive 10-20 times in terms of mileage, and it would‍ be sufficient even for the⁤ average lifespan of a car (which in ⁤the Czech Republic is about 20-22 years for internal⁤ combustion engine vehicles).

Interestingly, the amount of energy the⁤ battery can hold is even higher in the‍ first approximately 1500 cycles than‍ at the beginning. For‌ example, in the graph above, from the 400th to the 1000th ‍cycle, we see an increase of about 2%. In the aforementioned case, an electric vehicle with a 400 km range and after 400 cycles (i.e., after traveling 160,000 km) would not have to replace the battery due to decreasing range, as its range would actually ⁢be higher, around +/-408 km. The‌ second graph also shows the impact of fast charging on lifespan. With 2C charging (30 minutes), the capacity is at ⁢88% of the original capacity after 7000 cycles, while with 1C‌ (1 hour) and 0.5C (2 hours) charging, it is roughly at 89-90% after the same number of cycles.

The manufacturer claims an energy density of 200 Wh/kg, which is relatively ‍low for NCM batteries if they are indeed referring to individual cells and not ‍the entire battery. NCM ‌batteries typically range from around 240-300 Wh/kg (and NIO is starting production of cars with NCM batteries with 360 Wh/kg). The company⁣ uses 5th generation BMS (Battery Management System) to control the cells and achieve optimal battery performance. There will be two variants of ‌the HV-90 and HV-180 batteries, which can hold 35 kWh and 70 kWh, respectively, and can operate at voltages of 400 V‌ and 800 V. They are expected to be used in electric vehicles (especially as interchangeable batteries⁣ for heavy-duty trucks) or as stationary energy storage. Pre-production samples are expected to leave the factory gates in the next quarter⁢ of⁤ this year.

How does Electrovaya ensure safety and environmental friendliness in the⁢ design and manufacturing process of their⁤ ⁢Infinity-HV batteries

10 million kilometers, which is impressive. Electrovaya’s ‍⁢Infinity-HV batteries also boast ‍a higher energy density compared to their previous generation batteries. This⁤ means that the batteries can store more energy and provide longer driving ranges for electric ⁤vehicles.

Moreover, the ⁢Infinity-HV⁣ batteries feature a fast charging capability, enabling electric vehicle owners to charge their vehicles in a shorter amount of time. This is a ‍significant advantage, as ‍one of the major ‌concerns for electric vehicle owners is⁢ the time it takes ⁣to charge their vehicles.

Electrovaya’s new batteries also prioritize safety. The company has included various safety features to prevent‌ issues such as overheating or‌ thermal runaway, which is important ‍for the longevity and‍ reliability of the batteries.

Additionally, Electrovaya has⁤ designed the batteries to‍ be environmentally friendly. The company utilizes a green manufacturing process that minimizes the use of⁢ harmful chemicals. This not only‌ reduces the ‍environmental impact but also ensures that the batteries are safe for⁢ both the users and the environment.

Overall, Electrovaya’s ⁢Infinity-HV batteries offer a promising solution for the electric vehicle industry. With their high energy density, long lifespan, fast ⁢charging capability, ‍and safety features, these batteries could potentially ⁤revolutionize the market and contribute to the widespread adoption of electric⁤ vehicles.
