Electronic Arts is said to be planning the MMORPG that has been running since 2011 Star Wars – The Old Republic (1.1 in review) from Bioware to Broadsword Online Games. So reported IGN citing sources familiar with the matter. Broadsword already looks after the MMORPGs for EA Ultima Online and Dark Age of Camelot. When asked, EA said they are evaluating how to give the game and team the best opportunity for growth and development, which includes discussions with Broadsword.
The Old Republic team is said to currently number between 70 and 80 people within Bioware Studios. Half of those are expected to move to Broadsword Online Games. The remaining members should be given the opportunity to hold other roles within EA, but could also be fired.
Bioware, meanwhile, is supposed to focus its resources on the single-player projects Dragon Age – Dreadwolf and Mass Effect 4 focus. In recent years, Bioware has often made headlines by saying that longtime senior employees like Casey Hudson or the creative director of the fourth Dragon Age left the company. In March of this year, EA announced that Mark Darrah (Executive Producer von Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age – Inquisition, as a consultant supporting the development of Dragen Age – Dreadwolf. Darrah left Bioware in 2021. A good portion of the Mass Effects team at Dreadwolf, which is currently in post-production, is helping with this, while a core team is involved in the pre-production of Mass Effect 4. Given this water level update on the status of Dragon Age – Dreadwolf, it may be time for EA to Summer Games Fest and the general publisher streams in June 2023 shares first gameplay impressions.
