Electrified atmosphere at PASOK – “Nails” Diamantopoulos against Doukas –

Although it was not an introductory meeting, it had the characteristics of an exploratory first “cohabitation” in a 9-member top political body in Harilaou Trikoupi, which, after the internal party elections for the leadership of PASOK, becomes a replica of the green unity as it is shaped by everyone’s pursuit to re-enter PASOK on the way to government. Already, Haris Doukas’s staff had fired trajectory-indicative shots, with the differentiation on the way of restructuring the party and the distribution of party roles by Nikos Androulakis. The mayor of Athens, Haris Doukas, appeared as the leader of an internal opposition, with the rest forming informally (some short-lived) the anti-Dukas dividing wall on the Androulaki side and from there.

However, the multiplicity of parties in power also requires political expression of “tendencies” in the spectrum of different wavelengths. Thus, the restoration of the liberal, extreme center-right current, which Andreas Loverdos once represented, is coming back to life, through Anna Diamantopoulou, to whom Nikos Androulakis has entrusted the responsibility of the political planning of the party.

It is no coincidence that upon entering the offices of Charilaou Trikoupi, on the evening of Tuesday 22 October 2024, shortly before the first meeting of the Coordinating Political Center began, former minister Anna Diamantopoulou undertook to confirm with nails and spikes her opposition to Harry Doukas, noting that “unity builds houses, discord tears them down”.

In fact, in contrast to Douka reports, a day before, that the union composition would be reflected if all the co-candidates for the leadership participated in the body (Mihalis Katrinis and Nadia Giannakopoulou do not participate), Anna Diamantopoulou hastened to defend the choices of Androulakis, emphasizing that it is a synthetic instrument. At the same time, he pointed out that the meeting of the Coordinating Political Center is taking place at an optimistic moment. As he explained, for many years the ND had more than double the percentages of PASOK and now for the first time the difference, even marginally, is single digits, according to polls. He even added that this must be preserved and the new course should begin “for an ideologically equipped, social democratic PASOK, ready for major struggles for the benefit of the people”.

With the presence of the Secretary of PASOK-KINAL AAndrea Spyropoulouof the party’s new press representative, a labor lawyer Kostas Tsoukalas and the deputy representative and member of the Political Council Olgas Markogiannakis the first meeting of the 9-member Coordinating Political Center, led by the president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, was enriched, but Pavlos Geroulanos did not participate in it, due to the operation on the vocal cords he had undergone on the same day.

The 9-member Coordinating Political Center, as defined by Nikos Androulakis, is composed of Pavlos Geroulanos, Anna Diamantopoulou, Nikos Christodoulakis, Milena Apostolaki, Thanasis Glavinas, Myrto Samaras, Katerina Solomou, Yannis Vardakastanis.

Two of the co-candidates for the presidency, Michalis Katrinis and Nadia Giannakopoulou, were not included in the composition of the 9-member body. Already, according to information, Michalis Katrinis does not criticize but subtly judges Androulaki’s decisions with press reports that the choice to put all the co-candidates for the presidency in the Coordinating Political Center would be synthetic, and from then on it is a political choice for which will be judged by Nikos Androulakis himself”.

Regarding the portfolio of National Defense that he took over, it was something that Michalis Katrinis requested from Nikos Androulakis. According to information Nikos Androulakis asked him from which position in the Parliamentary Group he would like to contribute and he asked him for the Department of National Defense. The president of PASOK called him later informing him that he is assigning him the National Defense Portfolio.

In his introductory statement, during the first meeting of the coordinating political body, on the afternoon of Tuesday, October 22, the president of PASOK-KINAL, Nikos Androulakis, pointed out, among other things, that the pre-election fight in the internal party elections for the leadership is “a gift not only for the PASOK but for the political system”, emphasizing that it is recognized horizontally that our internal party procedures were carried out with seriousness and political culture. For Nikos Androulakis suggested the need from now on to maintain “a climate of unity, seriousness and very high mobility”.

He called on executives and members in the next period to be alert so that PASOK is everywhere, everyone is on the front line, “in every corner of Greece, dynamically present in every battle inside and outside Parliament against the New Democracy”.

To add: “We went through the hard times, the pressure of the former bipartisanship. The citizens see PASOK as the opposite pole against New Democracy and this is also reflected in the latest opinion polls.” As Nikos Androulakis pointed out, “strategic decisions will be taken by the Political Council and the Central Political Committee. Here, we will achieve a faster tuning.
With a series of information campaigns that we will launch in the immediate future, we will communicate even more effectively our positions on health, accuracy, the housing crisis, labor rights and the problems of the agricultural world.”
