The electricity tariff increase next year will be “rather double-digit” – admitted Rafał Gawin, President of the Energy Regulatory Office.
– We are at the stage of processing applications (tariffs – ed.). (…) I have said many times that it is to be expected rather, double-digit increasesnot single-digit numbers. They will not only reflect the level of inflation – said the President of the Energy Regulatory Office in an interview with Wirtualna Polska. He reminded that the proceedings should be completed by December 17, so that the new energy tariffs could apply from January 1, 2022.
At the same time, Gawin admitted that tariff increase can lead to a situation where the recipient’s total household account may increase by at least a dozen or so percent.
Anti-inflationary shield and bills
The President of ERO also assessed the ideas presented by the prime minister, which are part of the so-called anti-inflationary shield.
– From the point of view of the regulator, the solutions are good, in the right direction, because they do not directly interfere with the market, but give a real effect to household consumers – said Rafał Gawin.
Among the solutions proposed by the government there are, among others VAT reduction for three months on electricity to 5 percent. and gas to 8%, temporary exemption from excise duty on electricity from the current PLN 5 / MWh to PLN 0 / MWh for households, reduction of excise duty on electricity for other consumers to the EU minimum.
VAT and excise tax reduction will not lower your bills right away?
The President of ERO informed that detailed legal regulations will be needed to calculate the impact of these proposals on the accounts. He pointed out that the excise tax is an element of costs taken into account when calculating the tariff for the sale of energy. However, he assessed that the proposals did not change the ongoing tariff approval process for 2022.
– If the regulations appear by December 17, we will be able to include them in the current tariff proceedings. If this did not happen, there is nothing to prevent the company from changing the tariff. We also have the power to call on the company to adjust tariffs, said Gawin.
