Electricity price 2024: Households are in for further price increases

Waiting for a miracle, that’s how the current situation on the energy market could be described. For households, the increase in prices does not end. There is a solution.

The price of electricity on the exchange does not correspond to the current prices for suppliers. With them, you can get 1 MWh of power electricity without VAT, fixed for at least 2 years, for a price of around 6,000 CZK. However, as shown by the current purchases of suppliers on the stock exchanges, the price may exceed the 8,000 CZK threshold by the end of the year. On the Czech energy exchange, the price of electricity delivery for next year exceeded 330 euros per MWh (CZK 8,085).

Some smaller companies have even broken this limit. The summer purchases of suppliers for the calendar year 2024 look pessimistic, where only the purchase price varies between CZK 8,000 and CZK 10,500 per MWh.

To fix prices or not?

In recent weeks, further price increases even for large companies were announced by the companies ČEZ and PRE, and now E.ON has also been added since September. Some supply companies don’t even allow or proactively offer price fixing. However, it is important not to get discouraged. The fact that prices will continue to rise is already certain, and unless a miracle really comes, doing nothing and waiting for help from someone else may not be enough.

At the moment, I cannot agree with the advice of some people who advise staying on open-ended contracts or even in supplier of last resort mode. Such opinions appeared after the collapse of Bohemia Energy, when the price of electricity rose to a level of around 2,500–3,000 CZK per MWh.

However, those who procrastinated and did not fix even these prices, then, given the current prices, they will pay more than twice as much. And yet another wave of price increases awaits us. Speculation could thus be very expensive for households.

The most suitable option still remains to be used trusted comparator, which will filter out reliable suppliers for you. Households can save thousands of crowns a year through cheaper acquisition price lists.
