So far, only the least numerous group of customers who have contracted contracts linked to the daily movement of wholesale prices pay a higher price for electricity supplies. Their offer is mostly associated with so-called alternative suppliers, which emerged as competitors to large players.
While last year customers saved thanks to dynamic tariffs, this year they have to pay extra. On the first day of January, electricity was bought on the daily market for an average of 37 euros per megawatt-hour, while last week it was already over 51 euros, ie 37 percent more expensive.
Bohemia Energy, one of the alternative suppliers, admits the influence of wholesale prices on the offer. However, he adds that the rate of price fixation is up to the customer. “We have a wide and transparent product offer, including tariffs that have a fixed price for two or three years. It is up to the customer which method of purchase he will decide, “says Bohemia Energy spokeswoman Hana Novotná.

EY analyst Blahoslav Němeček believes that suppliers will gradually increase the price of new fixed-term contracts. In the event that the customer’s contract expires, he will receive a new one with a higher price tag than a year ago.
“If the situation does not change, the increase will also affect contracts for an indefinite period. Probably until the summer, “expects Němeček. It is contracts of indefinite duration that are used by the largest number of customers, according to a rough estimate of up to sixty percent.
“It will be a fierce competition for who will keep the price low for the longest time. In the end, however, the price will certainly rise and may exceed ten percent, “says Němeček.

Still, companies are refusing to make it more expensive. “At MND, as always, we have prices for household customers secured in the longer term, and therefore we do not have to consider a general price increase yet,” said MND spokeswoman Dana Dvořáková, for example.
CEZ expresses itself in a similar way. “CEZ reduced the price of electricity in the autumn and we want to maintain advantageous prices for customers for as long as possible. We are not preparing a comprehensive adjustment of price lists in the foreseeable future, “said ČEZ spokesman Roman Gazdík.
At the same time, however, suppliers add that if the trend in the wholesale market continues, no one will avoid rising prices. The price of power on the Prague Stock Exchange is around 57 euros per megawatt-hour, which is the highest level in the last 2.5 years.
“By the end of the year, the price could reach the level of 60 euros per megawatt-hour,” Němeček anticipates. According to him, the price is being pushed mainly by the rising price of emission allowances, but the current growth is partly due to the generally optimistic mood on the commodity market.
