Electricity Blackouts Often Occur in Makassar, Observer Explains Five Impacts on the Economy

FAJAR.CO.ID, MAKASSAR — Regular power outages in Makassar since early September 2023 have had an impact on all sectors. Including the economic sector.

Digital Economy Observer Andika Isma said that there were at least five impacts of power outages on the economy in Makassar. The impact is no joke.

First, Andika Isma said it had an impact on business and industry. Many businesses and industries rely on electricity supplies to run daily operations.

“Electricity outages can stop production and result in financial losses,” he told dawn.co.id, Thursday (7/12/2023).

Second, he said productivity would decrease. Because power outages can disrupt the productivity of society as a whole.

“Whether in the industrial, office or household sectors, without electricity, daily activities will be hampered,” he said.

He said that power outages could also damage electronic equipment. Unplanned power outages can cause damage to electronic equipment and computers.

“This may result in additional costs for repair or replacement of equipment,” he added.

Fourth, the lecturer at the Faculty of Economics, Makassar State University (UNM) explained that investment can also have an impact. Because investors may hesitate to invest their capital in Makassar.

“Power outages can create uncertainty for businesses and investors. “Poor security of electricity supply may discourage them from investing or expanding operations in the area,” he explained.
