Electricity bill breaks the 1,000 euro mark

Household energy bills are rising sharply. For the month of August, the annual milestone of 1,000 euros was taken for electricity. For natural gas, that is on average more than 1,600 euros on an annual basis.

The high CO2 price in combination with expensive raw materials (including for natural gas) means that electricity and natural gas are currently extremely expensive. This is also apparent from the offers from the energy suppliers.

The federal energy regulator Creg calculated that a Belgian family with an average electricity consumption that entered into a contract in August has an annual bill of 1,014 euros. For Flanders, this concerns an average annual invoice of 1,041 euros. For comparison: in 2019, so pre-corona, that was about 891 euros.
For natural gas, the suppliers’ average offers for August amount to an annual bill of 1,609 euros, for an average Belgian family. For Flanders, this is 1,488 euros. Two years ago, an average family paid EUR 1,031 annually in natural gas.
It has been December 2018 since families in Flanders had to pay an average of more than 1,000 euros per year for electricity, according to figures from the Flemish energy regulator Vreg. For natural gas, these are the highest prices in Flanders since 2012.
