Electricity and gas bills, who will suffer the least increases

The increases in electricity and gas bills represent a very hot topic at the moment for citizens and businesses. A theme that involves not only internal but also external situations. However, consumption has stabilized for some time after the surge in mid-2021. In these days, however, geopolitical reasons are emerging that go beyond the borders of Italy and involve alliances and deployments international. The increase in gas is closely linked to the reasons that are leading to the high tension between the EU and NATO and Russia, the leading supplier of Italian and European gas.

Those who are less affected by the increases will be those who are still under the free market system. For those who are in the protected regime, however, the disbursement of electricity and gas travels under the economic and contractual conditions established by the regulatory authority for energy, networks and the environment (Arera). In this case, the rates they are subject to periodic variation by the authority and continue to rise.

Meanwhile, the government is grappling with decisions aimed at mitigating the negative effects of gas price increases. There have already been two decrees in 2021 that have amortized the increases inlast quarter of 2021 and for the first quarter of the year 2022. In these days the Government has launched a new intervention aimed at mitigating the increases in electricity and gas for the third quarter. Here are the interventions:

  • with 3 billion the system charges on electricity will be eliminated, both for domestic users and for small and large businesses;
  • with 590 million, on the other hand, VAT on gas will be reduced to 5%, which will also benefit from a cut in charges for another 480 million;
  • 500 million will be allocated to the strengthening of the social bonus for 3.5 million families. The discount on the electricity, gas and water bill is provided for families in conditions of economic hardship and for large families;
  • 700 million have been allocated for the tax credit in favor of energy-intensive companies, already tested in the Sostegni-ter decree;
  • the same type of concession is also granted to gas-intensive companies, about a thousand, to which over 500 million are allocated;
  • an additional chapter is that of local authorities: to maintain hospitals, the regions will be able to count on 400 million euros, while to ensure “continuity of services” the municipalities will have another 300 million available
