The “Electricité du Liban” Corporation announced, in a statement, that “the current total thermal production of electrical energy does not exceed 150 megawatts, noting that this production comes from the only gas group placed in service in the Zahrani plant (without the steam group, which cannot be operated in light of the instability and electrical network).
She stressed that “the current reality comes as a result of a series of precautionary measures taken by the corporation since 12/03/2023, which delays the pace of consumption of the gas oil storage, which has reached its minimum limits and is about to run out, thus avoiding total darkness.”
She explained, “This very low production capacity inevitably results in many difficulties in ensuring the stability and continuity of the network, which requires no less than 1,000 megawatts for this, which threatens its complete collapse at any moment, as the corporation has previously reported several times in previous media statements.” In this regard, such that during the past week alone the electrical network was subjected to more than fourteen (14) general outages (blackouts) across the entire Lebanese territory (which also affects the safety of the institution’s equipment), which is beyond the control and responsibility of the Electricité du Liban. “Completely.”
She added, “As the Electricité du Liban works under very difficult technical conditions to maintain the supply of electricity around the clock as much as possible to the basic vital facilities in Lebanon (airport, port, water pumps, sewage, the Lebanese University, prisons, and other basic facilities… .), with the aim of not completely paralyzing it and thus entering into the forbidden, and since it is clear from the latest data that the arrival date of the first part of the gas oil shipment supplied to the Electricité du Liban Corporation, which was supposed to arrive on 12/06/2023 According to the public tender conducted by the Ministry of Energy and Water – General Directorate of Petroleum via the Public Procurement Authority website, expected to take place between 12/30-31/2023, the corporation will therefore gradually raise the thermal supply to the limits of 520 megawatts, soon. The first part of the shipment in question arrives and is unloaded.”
At the conclusion of the statement, the Electricité du Liban called and appealed to “all public administrations and institutions once again, especially the basic vital facilities in the country, to fulfill their obligations in terms of paying all electricity bills and their accumulated and current dues in exchange for their consumption of the electrical current that they derive regularly around the clock to run the country’s affairs.” .
