Electrical Safety Precautions for Designing and Building Robotic Arms on a Budget

In the process of designing and building robotic arms, one of the critical aspects to consider is the electrical safety precautions that must be implemented. Although it may seem complicated, there are some steps you can take to ensure your system is safe and reliable, even on a tight budget.

One of the most important safety measures is the use of fuses. Fuses are designed to protect the system by acting as a sacrificial component that interrupts the circuit when an excessive amount of current flows through it. This prevents component damage and reduces the risk of electrical hazards.

Another safety feature to consider is circuit breakers. Circuit breakers are devices that automatically interrupt the flow of electrical current in the event of a fault or overload. They act as a switch and can be manually reset after the fault has been cleared. Circuit breakers provide an additional layer of protection against electrical damage.

When it comes to the main power supply, it is important to include a switch that allows you to easily turn the control on and off. This switch must be connected to the pins of the power supply unit (PSU) for safe operation.

The emergency stop mechanism is also very important for the safety of the robotic arm. This can be achieved by using a simple single pole normally open (NO) contactor. If an emergency stop signal is applied, such as 36 V from a normally closed (NC) contact, this allows current to flow to the motor controllers. In the absence of an emergency stop signal, the contactor stops current flow to all motor controllers, ensuring that the system stops in the event of an emergency.

A CAN bus with an adapter for a laptop can be used to control the robot. This part of the design seems fine.

Implementing these safety measures will improve the overall safety and reliability of the robotic arm without breaking the budget. By considering fuses, switches, a well-designed power supply, and an emergency stop mechanism, the risk of electrical hazards can be greatly reduced.
